Theme 6: Access to education
Summary:
"Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world" – Nelson Mandela. "One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world" – Malala.
Education is the key to lifting people out of poverty; but what if you don't have the key? Millions of children around the world are not able to go to school. Without an education it is difficult to find decent work (see theme 2) and provide for a family, which means the poverty cycle continues into the next generation. And remember school does more than just teach Maths and languages – it also teaches vital life skills such as basic hygiene and money management.
Several of the children in Growing up around the World either had no access to education, or had to drop out of school early. Students can watch the clips for any of the 11 children in the series to find out more about access to education in different countries. Activities 17, 18 and 24 will also help them to find out more.
