Theme 5: Sustainable consumption and production

Summary:

Deforestation, overfishing, over-mining and overhunting are all results of the way we globally consume and produce. These often lead to water, air and ground pollution. As the world population grows, this will only put more and more pressure on the earth's resources. If we want to ensure that our children and our children's children can still enjoy our natural resources, we need to take action. That is what sustainable development is all about: how can we meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations?

Many countries around the world face major challenges in dealing with pollution and resource depletion. However, not all countries are able or willing to deal with these challenges. Students can watch the film clips for Rosemary, Angela and Emilie to see the effects of unsustainable consumption and production, namely over-mining, pollution and overfishing. Students can also complete activities 14, 15, 16 and 25.
