Panjy was born in rural Tamil Nadu, India. Most people in her village work in the local fireworks factory. In theory India provides free education for all children, but in reality, earning money to put food on the table comes first.
At age 10, Panjy loves being at school and hopes she can stay. She wants to become a doctor so she can help people for free.
By the time Panjy is 19, she has been taken out of school and she is also working at the factory. She has also been married for a year to a man from a neighbouring village. Her mother had to borrow money to pay the dowry and the family now has a debt of 200,000 rupees. “Here no one thinks a man and a woman are equal, a woman who says they are will be looked upon badly.”
